Frequently asked questions

Which parts work offline?

Editing, local execution, and saved course/reference content work without internet access, subject to course access rights. Purchases, restoration, content updates, and update checks need a connection. Network programs need access to their destination; the built-in client/server exercises communicate locally.

Can I install Python packages?

The app includes CPython 3.14, its standard library, NumPy, Requests, and Flask. There is no pip installation. You can add Python source modules to your project; arbitrary third-party native packages are not supported.

Where do my program’s files go?

Project programs run in that project’s directory. Relative paths such as reports/note.txt are inside it. Generated text files and SQLite databases remain there between runs. Course checks use isolated temporary working directories; their generated data is not a project backup.

How do I choose or reopen a workspace?

Open Settings → Project Workspace. On Mac, moving a workspace transfers the current projects; opening an existing workspace switches to its projects without merging the old ones. A recognized workspace contains a Projects folder, or a PyStarter/Projects folder under the selected directory. Keep project metadata and the folder structure intact. If access expires or a drive is disconnected, reconnect it and authorize the folder again.

On iPhone/iPad, enable Files access to move projects to Files → On My iPhone/iPad → Python Starter. Deleting the app deletes this folder too. Back up important files before uninstalling. A Mac workspace outside the app container normally survives removing the app, but reopening it does not restore deleted app settings or course progress.

How do client and server projects work?

Select “Include a server” when creating a project. Start the Flask server in its workspace, then run the client. The client receives the loopback URL in sys.argv[1]; the port is assigned dynamically. Stopping the client does not stop the server. Restart the server after editing it. HTTP course checks start a fresh server for each case automatically.

How do I restore purchases or projects?

Use Restore Purchases with the same Apple Account to restore IDE Pro and any remaining Learning Pro access. Learning Pro lasts 1, 3, or 12 months and does not renew automatically. Restoration does not restart an expired period or recover deleted source files. IDE Pro and Learning Pro are separate purchases.

Restore a deleted project from Deleted Projects while its files remain available. Permanent deletion cannot be undone. Uninstalling or clearing app data can remove private projects and course progress.

Why can’t the API reference update?

The saved reference remains readable. Check your connection and retry later. Content updates do not upload your code or progress.
